What does an air quality sensor measure? +

How does a PM2.5 sensor work? +
PM2.5 sensors in the ZAQ range use laser scattering. Airborne particles pass through a laser beam and the light they scatter is measured to calculate particle concentration, with a range of 0-1000 μg/m³ and resolution of 0.3 μg/m³.
What is the difference between a VOC sensor and a particle sensor? +
A VOC sensor detects volatile organic compounds using a photoionization detector (PID), reporting a value in ppm or ppb. A particle sensor measures solid airborne particles such as dust using laser scattering, reporting a value in μg/m³. They measure different pollutant types and are not interchangeable.
Can these sensors be used outdoors? +

Water Quality Sensors
What is the difference between a single-parameter sensor and a multi-parameter meter? +
A single-parameter sensor, such as the ZWQ-PH1 pH electrode, measures one property only. A multi-parameter meter, such as the ZWQ500, combines several sensing elements (temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, with COD, chlorophyll or cyanobacteria as options) in one probe body connected through a single cable.
What communication protocol do these water quality sensors use? +
All sensors in the Zata IoT water quality range communicate over RS485 using the Modbus RTU protocol. The ZWQ500 multi-parameter meter additionally supports RS232, WiFi, Bluetooth and optional LTE.
Do these sensors need regular calibration? +
This depends on the sensor. The dissolved oxygen sensor (ZWQ-DO1) uses fluorescence measurement and does not need initial calibration or electrolyte replacement. Electrode-based sensors such as pH, ORP, ammonia, fluoride and chloride use ion-selective or glass electrodes, which typically need periodic calibration as part of routine maintenance.
Which sensors have self-cleaning functions? +
The turbidity (ZWQ-TUB1), COD (ZWQ-COD1), transparency (ZWQ-TP1), chlorophyll (ZWQ-CHL1) and blue-green algae (ZWQ-BGA1) sensors all include a self-cleaning function, either a brush or automatic wiper, because their optical windows are prone to biofouling in continuous deployment.
What power supply do the sensors require? +
Most sensors in the range run on DC 12V or 24V. The ZWQ500 multi-parameter meter also supports solar power. The residual chlorine sensor (ZWQ-CT1) and turbidity sensor (ZWQ-TUB1) have slightly different supply specifications, so check the individual product page before ordering.
Can I use these sensors in a swimming pool? +
The residual chlorine sensor (ZWQ-CT1) is specifically listed for tap water, secondary water supply and swimming pool applications. It requires a continuous sample flow of 250-500 mL/min and operates within a pH range of 4-9.

What is the difference between a compact weather sensor and separate individual sensors? +
A compact weather sensor such as the Zata ZWS series combines multiple measurement channels, for example wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, pressure and rainfall, in a single housing with one mounting point and one communication interface. Separate individual sensors, such as a standalone anemometer or a standalone rain gauge, measure one parameter each and are mounted and wired independently. Compact sensors simplify installation; separate sensors allow replacing or upgrading one parameter without affecting the others.
What communication interface do these weather sensors use? +
RS485 with Modbus protocol is the standard interface across the Zata IoT range. Many models also offer RS232, SDI-12, WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, LoRa or NB-IoT as optional interfaces, so the sensor can connect to a range of data loggers, PLCs or IoT gateways.
Can these sensors run on solar power? +
Yes. Most sensors in this range accept DC 12/24V input and are compatible with solar power supply, with typical current draw under 15-20 mA at 12V, which suits remote or off-grid monitoring sites.
What operating temperature range do the sensors cover? +

What is the difference between a weather sensor and a weather station? +
A weather sensor is a single- or multi-parameter module, such as a rain gauge or anemometer, that measures one aspect of the weather. A weather station is a complete system that combines several sensors, a housing and a communication interface, built for a specific site such as a road, solar farm or power line.
What communication interfaces do these weather stations use? +

What IP rating do industrial weather stations need? +

Ultrasonic vs Cup Anemometer
Do ultrasonic anemometers need calibration? +
Ultrasonic anemometers have no mechanical parts to recalibrate for wear, though the speed-of-sound reading is temperature-dependent and factory-compensated.
Can ultrasonic anemometers measure in freezing conditions? +
Yes. Without moving cups to seize, ultrasonic anemometers such as the ZWS200 continue producing accurate wind data through light icing.
IP Ratings Explained
Is IP68 always better than IP67? +
For submersion resistance, yes. But a sensor that will never be submerged doesn't need IP68, and it doesn't improve dust protection over IP67.
Why does one product page list two different IP ratings? +
Different components inside the same housing can be sealed differently, so a compact weather sensor can carry separate ratings for its temperature/humidity module and its pressure-sensing element.
RS485 and Modbus Explained
Can I run multiple sensors on one RS485 cable? +
Yes. Each sensor gets a unique Modbus address, and many sensors can share the same two-wire bus and data logger.
What's the maximum cable length for RS485? +
RS485 can reliably run up to roughly 1200 metres, far beyond RS232 or most wireless options.

Which rain gauge type is most accurate in heavy rainfall? +
Weighing rain gauges tend to hold up best in heavy rainfall since they measure accumulated mass directly rather than counting discrete bucket tips.

What's the difference between a pyranometer and a pyrheliometer? +
