Tipping Bucket vs Weighing vs Piezoelectric Rain Gauges
Rainfall can be measured by counting bucket tips, weighing accumulated water, or detecting raindrop impacts piezoelectrically. Each method has different accuracy characteristics, moving parts, and maintenance needs.
Tipping bucket
A tipping bucket rain gauge collects water in a funnel that fills a small see-saw bucket; each time the bucket fills to a fixed volume it tips, empties, and triggers a pulse. Rainfall is calculated by counting pulses over time. Weighing
A weighing rain gauge measures the actual weight of accumulated water in a collection vessel, converting weight directly to rainfall depth. It also has no bucket mechanism to jam, though it uses an inverted siphon for automatic drainage once the vessel fills.
Piezoelectric

Weighing suits sites expecting heavy or intense rainfall where under-reading is a real risk, or where snow/mixed precipitation needs capturing by weight. Piezoelectric suits compact multi-parameter installations where minimising moving parts and enabling integration into one small sensor housing matters most.
